I Love Teaching... But I Needed a Second Income

Some afternoons, I just sit there.

The students have gone home. The room is finally quiet. I take a sip of coffee, look out the classroom window and think about life.

I have spent more than 26 years working in education. Today, I work with adult immigrant students who are learning English, completing high-school requirements and trying to create better lives for themselves and their families.

Many of them work jobs, raise children and study in a new language. Yet they still show up ready to learn. Watching them keep moving forward is one of the most rewarding parts of my work.

I love teaching them. But loving your work and feeling financially secure are not always the same thing.

Then real life got expensive.

Like many families, ours has faced expenses that were never part of the original plan. Home repairs, rising costs and unexpected bills can change your financial picture very quickly.

Retirement was also getting closer. I began thinking seriously about what I wanted the next chapter of life to look like.

I wanted more breathing room. I wanted to be better prepared for unexpected expenses. And I wanted the simple freedom to occasionally take my wife somewhere like Santa Cruz or Lake Tahoe without feeling that every dollar had already been spoken for.

I wasn’t trying to escape the classroom.

I was not looking for another full-time job. I did not want to spend every evening commuting somewhere else. And I was not interested in claims that success happens automatically or overnight.

I simply wanted something I could learn and work on around my existing responsibilities.

• Something I could work on for an hour or two at a time
• Something that did not require leaving the career I love
• Something a regular person could learn step by step
• Something supported by training and useful tools
• Something that did not depend on guaranteed-income promises

I looked at a lot of options.

Some were complicated. Others came with aggressive sales tactics, recurring costs or pressure to chase friends and relatives.

I already had a career, students, responsibilities and a family. I needed a realistic path to explore — not another full-time burden disguised as an opportunity.

Eventually, I found a different approach.

What caught my attention was not a promise of instant wealth. It was the fact that much of the basic system was already in place.

There were pages, follow-up tools, training and support designed to help someone get started without first becoming a professional web developer or marketing expert.

I was also interested in how artificial-intelligence tools could assist with repetitive tasks and follow-up. AI tools can help with organization and communication, but they do not guarantee leads, sales or earnings and still require human review.

Most importantly, I could learn at my own pace and work around my classroom schedule.

In a way, it felt similar to what I ask of my adult immigrant students: start where you are, learn one step at a time, ask questions and keep moving forward.

Is this guaranteed to work?

No legitimate business can promise that. Results depend on effort, consistency, follow-up, skill development, marketing, expenses, consumer demand and many other factors.

Some participants may earn income, while others may earn little or nothing. Some may lose money after considering advertising, products, services and other business expenses.

I am still learning and building. I am sharing this as a teacher who found an option worth exploring and decided to document the journey honestly.
